About Alibaug

Alibaug

While Alibaug is mostly renowned as a beach resort, the town is also worth exploring because of its intriguing and surprising past. After escaping persecution in Palestine, the Bene Israeli Jews made land in the region where their ship landed some 2,200 years ago. They retained their religion but assimilated into the local language and culture. Reportedly, the name Alibaug (meaning "Ali garden") was inspired by one of the Jews, a wealthy merchant named Ali who had plantations and orchards.

From the beginning of the 16th century until the Marathas drove them out in the 17th, the Portuguese governed the area. Naval base Kolaba Fort, near Alibaug, was established by Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Later, around the start of the eighteenth century,Kanhoji Angre, the commander of the Maratha Navy, raided British trade ships out of the fort. In an attempt to take the fort, the Portuguese and British came together but were unsuccessful. The British did not actually take possession of the area or the fort until the early 1800s.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get from the Gateway of India in South Mumbai's Colaba district to Alibaug is by boat to Mandwa Jetty. By ferry, Mandawa Jetty can be reached in around one hour, or in twenty minutes by speedboat. By bus or auto rickshaw, it takes an additional 30 to 45 minutes to get to the beach from the jetty. The cost of the ferry includes the bus.

All year round, from roughly 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., ferries run, with the exception of the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. The weather will determine when services restart, but they often do so in late August.

Try Uber's new app-based Uber BOAT service if cost is not a concern. It was introduced in January 2019 and offers speed boat rentals between Mandawa Jetty in Alibaug, Gujarat, and Mumbai. Every day, the service is available from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Up to eight people can fit in a speed boat, which costs 5,700 rupees one way. For groups of ten or more people, a larger boat costs 9,500 rupees per person, one way.

Up to 500 passengers and 180 cars can travel on the round-the-clock Ro-Ro ferry service from Bhaucha Dhakka Ferry Wharf (at the dockyards near Mazgaon) to Mandwa, which will run during the monsoon season.

Additionally, older ferries that transport both bikes and passengers depart from Bhaucha Dhakka Ferry Wharf. The ferries run to Revas Jetty and take around an hour and a half to arrive.

If you're driving, you can get to Alibaug via the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-17). Depending on traffic, the drive from Mumbai takes three to four hours.
